Novels

Andrew has written three fantasy novels, which have been published by Omnibus Books/ Scholastic Australia. With My Knife, Dragonfox and The Red Dragon have a wide appeal among younger readers aged 9 to 15 years, with some schools having reading sets for upper primary school students and lower high school students.

The novels have also proven popular with adult readers, perhaps reflecting the fact that Andrew’s aim in writing them was to create stories of universal appeal, stories that he himself as an adult would like to read. Andrew hopes that they might belong to the category of books to which CS Lewis alluded in his essay “On Stories”:

No book is really worth reading at the age of ten which is not equally (and often far more) worth reading at the age of fifty—except, of course, books of information. The only imaginative works we ought to grow out of are those which it would probably have been better not to have read at all. A mature palate will probably not care much for crème de menthe: but it ought still to enjoy bread and butter and honey.

Stories

Andrew has written fifty short stories that have been published in various literary magazines and newspapers and broadcast by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and the British Broadcasting Corporation. Some of these stories have been collected in two books, The Bowgada Birds and The Dispossessed. Also, several stories are included his mixed-genre collections, Abiding Things and Therefore, The Dreaming.
